M. LIZ ANDREWS

On July 1, 2009, M. Liz Andrews mailed a Letter to President Obama in the form of a PhotoBook as an act of “artistic citizenship” to launch the LetterToObama project. She invites other artists, activists and citizens to do the same. Read her first LetterToObama, “Sonnet: January 20, 2009″ below. Thanks.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

M. LIZ ANDREWS is an activist artist educator. In May 2009 she completed an M.A. in Arts Politics at Tisch School of Arts, NYU where she conceptualized the LetterToObama project. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 2005 with a concentration in Social Justice Issues, Liz returned to her hometown of Denver and worked on several arts, education and social change initiatives. She uses the process, politics and products of her artistic work to witness reality and incite dialogue. Currently, Andrews works as an administrator in the department of Photography & Imaging at Tisch while also pursuing performance and curatorial projects. She is a member of the Never Quiet Collective. Liz stands on the shoulders of people who have struggled for justice and sees herself as a torchbearer.

These photos brought me right back to many moments in November and January. Beautiful and inspiring images and a reminder how significant this election was in engaging people, no matter their politics. I can’t wait to participate!
