The Crossroads

April 4, 2010
Every day is a crossroads for us as we create and recreate ourselves with every thought, word and action. Our actions have a ripple effect across the globe. In this April 2010 publication of the Four-Four, Zoraida Lopez captures a moment and a movement that reach beyond the time and place of her photograph.

ARTIST. STATEMENT.
A core component to my approach to creating work is my yoga practice. I view both as methods of educating my community and, hopefully, helping them heal. As a result, much of my work, both in the yoga and arts arena, focuses on the underserved. I partake in very little photo manipulation in the darkroom or on my computer. I rely on natural light and the camera angle from which the forms I document can be the most they can be. I took this photo during my semester studying photography in Trinidad (spring 2003). It was taken at a protest against the US occupation of Iraq. Through the process of creation, I hope to use my camera as a device to open unexplored facets of where I live. Through my travels, I realize that many of these themes are universal. I hope to document these themes with thought and care while conveying chances for new beginnings and hope.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Photographer ZORAIDA LOPEZ seeks to produce photographs that embody the principle of art promoting both self and societal awareness. The imagery captured in Zoraida’s photography challenges the mind, spirit and imagination.  Zoraida’s interest in art first peaked during the early part of her college career. As a political science major, she became fascinated with the documentation of political revolution. Zoraida studied art history and European labor movements in Italy and she has both studied and exhibited photography in Trinidad, Connecticut and California. Themes to be found in her work include the role of women in modern society, labor movements, political organizing, and immigration. Zoraida is currently developing programs that incorporate photography and art for incarcerated youth.
